A downloadable game

Strike Force takes its inspirations from the action/adventure cartoons and TV shows of the 80's, like G.I.Joe or A-Team. In this game you'll lead two elite agents of Strike Force against the forces of HAVOC as they infiltrate a secret research lab in the depths of the Arctic Ocean. Can you get in and get out with the evidence you need to help Strike Force defeat HAVOC's latest evil plans? Tune in to today's thrilling episode of Strike Force!

Strike Force was an idea I had been mulling about for a while and PunyJam #3 provided me a perfect opportunity to make an initial attempt at bringing it to life. While the gam jam version falls quite short of my original plans, I'm still happy with the product that was submitted (bugs notwithstanding).

I hope you enjoy this 2 to 3 hour gameplay slice of the world of Strike Force!

UPDATE
The PunyJam #3 voting results are in. Strike Force tied for 2nd place, which is fantastic company to be in. A mild rework of the game to polish off the rougher edges, improve puzzles, and tighten up some gameplay is in the planning stages.

There are a few outright losing scenarios (with fair warnings). There is also a larger meta-puzzle which can lead to two endings, “good” and “bad." In general, it seems to take about 2 hours or so to complete.

Fun things to try after finishing
  • xyzzy has 2 random entries.
  • A joke I laughed at way too hard is triggered when you try to put random things inside the kitchen appliances.
  • After hearing the xyzzy variations, check the leisure items by the television.
  • A direct G.I.Joe reference is found if you try to rub/clean/wipe things.
Brief thoughts about the game

I'm putting this in a hidden portion, because I don't want it influencing judges during the competition.

Apparently in fixing problems at 2am I introduced new problems, right from the start position in the game. Fantastic. I wish I had a better development process for Inform to prevent things like this from sneaking in. :(

This game is nowhere near my original scope, which I thought was a fine size until the deadline approached and I had to make drastic cuts. The original premise was that you would control a team at all times, either directly or by issuing orders as Commander Raven.

I had so much fun playing in the sandbox and coming up with a new G.I.Joe-esque fantasy world. I think the concept of having a different mix of field specialists on a mission lends itself to a wide variety of puzzle and story scenarios. After a break, I'd like to return to this project and do it real justice.

I apologize a little for some things in the PunyJam submission.

  1. I think I made the puzzles a little too simple and obvious. I erred on the side of caution too hard for the Jam.
  2. I wanted the reveal of the lab to have a dramatic impact, especially in the confines of such a small scoped game jam game. That said, I wish I'd had time to put more of a stealth "Somebody's coming, find a place to hide!" puzzley sequence between the airlock and the lab.
  3. The endgame is a touch unfair because you can lock yourself out of the good ending right at the very beginning. I intended to add a sequence after the airlock, giving Raven one more chance to tidy up the control box, but ran out of time. But the game is short and once you know the sequence for stealing the Ice-X, it doesn't take long to play a second time. Replay value?! :shrug_emoji_if _we_had_one:
  4. Technically, repairing the wires should also be done to get the good ending, but only if I could have extended the ending sequence as mentioned above.
  5. The lockpick never quite worked the way I'd hoped. A strong programmatic solution finally came to me too late to implement for the jam.
